Dr. Waitkus has served in the U.S. Army. For two years, he was an electronics and radar systems instructor in the Ordnance School at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. Dr. Waitkus then attended West Virginia University to obtain a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked for the General Electric Company before attending the West Virginia University School of Dentistry. While in Dental School Dr. Waitkus conducted research projects for the Department of Restorative Dentistry and the Department of Orthodontics. After graduation, he worked at the WVU Dental School as a Clinical Instructor with responsibility to give 15 lectures to third year dental students each year.
He was accepted into the orthodontic resident program at the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, NY. Concurrently, Dr. Waitkus was accepted as a Clinical Research Fellow by the Department of Dental Research at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He concentrated on genetics and bone physiology while obtaining a Post Doctoral Masters Degree. His research was supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health, USPHS. The research was entitled, "Effects of Autogenous Periosteal Transplants to Facial Sutures". This research was awarded first prize in the Post Doctoral Research Competition sponsored by the International Association of Dental Research in Copenhagen, Denmark.
While practicing Orthodontics in the Richmond area, Dr. Waitkus held a part time faculty position for 3 years at the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry Department of Orthodontics. Dr. Waitkus’ community service included coaching and providing financial support to the local athletics programs. He was a member of the Chesterfield Lions Club, where he served as president, and on the Board of Management of the Chester Area YMCA.
Dr. Waitkus has been a Board Certified Orthodontist since 1986, and a member of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics. He also is a member of the Tidewater, the Virginia, the Southern and the American Associations of Orthodontics.
Dr. Waitkus and his late wife Dr. Nancy Burton Waitkus have three children, Alexander Paul and Mark Daniel graduated from the University of Virginia, and The College of William and Mary, respectively, and Pamela Ann has degrees from both West Virginia University and The College of William and Mary.
Dr. Waitkus resides in Virginia Beach.
